On Saturday, March 12, 2016, a group of us from the CAI-GLAC Outreach committee volunteered at the Los Angeles Food Bank Saturday.  It was really hard work, but so rewarding.

The food donations come in on pallets from stores, supermarkets, individuals, and organizations. Volunteers sort the food, check quality and expiration dates, and organize for distribution.

It is staggering how many people in Los Angeles alone do not have a enough food. People living on Social Security have to make decisions whether to buy medicine or food. May families must decide whether to pay rent or buy food. The food bank does amazing work. That one day alone, we processed enough food to serve 80,000 people for a day.

In 2015 alone, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank distributed 52 million meals–that’s more than 62 million pounds of food. 20 percent of that food is fresh produce.

We look forward to continuing this tradition of serving our community with regular outreach events.
