The town, which has been working with the companies since July 4, when a deck collapse at 4403 Ocean Drive sending more than 20 members of a Virginia family to the hospital, announced the program late Wednesday afternoon after working for weeks to try to coordinate an effort. Participating companies are Angelfish Properties, Bluewater Real Estate, CENTURY 21 Coastland Realty, Emerald Isle Realty, Shorewood Real Estate, Spinnakers Reach Realty and Sun-Surf Realty. Bluewater owner Woody Warren, whose company managed the Ocean Drive house, said he is happy to participate and glad the other six companies are participating, too. “We met several times to talk about it, and agreed it was a good idea,” he said of the program. “We hope it will prevent future problems. Anything, over time, needs to be inspected, and we all obviously care about our guests and want to do everything we can to ensure their safety.” Town Manager Frank Rush praised the companies. “I honestly applaud them,” he said. “We’re all hoping this will make for a safer environment for our visitors, and the town is going to work with them to make that happen,’ he said. Under the program, effective Thursday, all single-family and duplex vacation rental units managed by these companies are required to be inspected at least once annually, by either a licensed North Carolina general contractor or a licensed North Carolina professional engineer. The idea is to identify any safety or structural concerns, and to have repairs completed by Tuesday, March 1, of next year, before the tourist season kicks off around Easter. The onus will be on the unit owners to make any safety or structural repairs that are identified as necessary, and “failure to complete the necessary … repairs will result in the vacation rental unit being suspended from the vacation rental companies’ management programs until the repairs are complete,” according to the town news release." target="_blank">here.

The major vacation rental companies in the North Carolina town of Emerald Isle have banded together to start a mandatory deck inspection program.
